The Numbers That Matter Most in 2026
Five findings define the current landscape. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands (2025) found brand web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview visibility while backlinks correlate just 0.218, a three-to-one gap. Profound's analysis of 680 million citations (August 2024 to June 2025) found about 83% of AI citations point to third-party sources, not brand-owned sites. Wix research reported by Contently (April 2026) found listicles earn 21.9% of all AI citations, the top format. And the overlap between AI Overview citations and top-10 organic results is small: roughly 38% per Ahrefs, and as low as about 17% per BrightEdge (2025). Ranking and getting cited are different games.
The rest of this page groups the data into themed tables so a specific number is easy to find, quote, and link. If you want the strategy those numbers imply rather than the numbers themselves, start with our analysis of what the mentions-versus-backlinks data actually means or the practical guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT.
How AI Assistants Choose Their Citations
The citation data points one direction: assistants lean on third-party consensus, community platforms, and video far more than on brand websites or classic link authority. No single domain dominates any assistant, and different assistants trust largely different sources.
| Stat | Figure | Source, year |
|---|---|---|
| Brand web mentions correlation with AI Overview visibility | 0.664 | Ahrefs, 75,000-brand study, 2025 |
| Backlinks correlation with AI Overview visibility | 0.218 | Ahrefs, 75,000-brand study, 2025 |
| YouTube mentions correlation with AI visibility, the strongest single signal measured | 0.737 | Ahrefs, extended study, Dec 2025 |
| AI citations pointing to third-party sources vs brand-owned sites | ~83% vs ~17% | Profound, 680M citations, Aug 2024 to Jun 2025 |
| Domains cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity | only ~11% | Profound, 2025 |
| Share of AI responses citing Reddit | 40.1% | Semrush, 2025 |
| Share of AI responses citing Wikipedia | 26.3% | Semrush, 2025 |
| Share of AI responses citing YouTube | 23.5% | Semrush, 2025 |
| Citation share of the single top-cited domain on any one platform | rarely above ~5% | Evertune, 200M prompts analyzed, 2025 |
| ChatGPT citation rate growth across 2025 (share of responses containing citations to brands) | 0.6% to 2.8% | ALM and industry roundups, 2025 |
| Share of Google AI Overview links going to review platforms | 8.5% | MaxAEO/aisosystem, 2025 to 2026 |
| Share of analyzed AI responses in which review platforms appeared | 34.5% | MaxAEO/aisosystem, 2025 to 2026 |
Two of those rows deserve a second look. The ~11% domain overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity means visibility on one assistant says almost nothing about visibility on another; each retrieval layer must be earned separately. And the ~5% ceiling from Evertune's 200 million prompts means no brand owns an assistant the way a site can own a keyword: citations are spread thin, which keeps the door open for small players.
Google AI Overviews by the Numbers
AI Overviews expanded fast, pulled back, and cut clicks the whole way: from 6.49% of queries in January 2025 to a ~25% peak in July, back to 15.69% by November (Semrush), while the CTR penalty on the top organic result deepened from 34.5% (Ahrefs, April 2025) to 58% (Ahrefs, December 2025).
| Stat | Figure | Source, year |
|---|---|---|
| Share of Google queries showing an AI Overview across 2025 (Jan peak-to-Nov path) | 6.49% to ~25% to 15.69% | Semrush, 10M-keyword study, 2025 |
| Informational queries triggering an AI Overview | 57.1% | Semrush, 2025 |
| Commercial / transactional / navigational queries triggering one | 18.57% / 13.94% / 10.33% | Semrush, 2025 |
| CTR reduction on the top-ranking result when an AI Overview is present | 34.5% | Ahrefs, Apr 2025 |
| Same measurement repeated eight months later, 300,000 keywords | 58% | Ahrefs, Dec 2025 |
| Position-one CTR on informational keywords, Dec 2023 vs Dec 2025 | 0.076% to 0.039% | Ahrefs, Dec 2025 |
| Organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview, before vs after | 1.76% to 0.61% (a 61% drop) | Seer Interactive, Sep 2025 |
| Searches where users clicked a traditional result, with vs without an AI summary | 8% vs 15% | Pew Research Center, Mar 2025 data |
| Visits where users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself | 1% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Users ending their browsing session after a results page with an AI summary vs without | 26% vs 16% | Pew Research Center, 2025 |
| Average AI Overview length | 1,766 characters (~254 words) | SE Ranking, 100,013-keyword study, 2025 |
| Links cited per AI Overview on average; sources in the longest answers (6,600+ characters) | 4 to 6 links; up to 28 sources | SE Ranking, 2025 |
| Overlap between AI Overview citations and top-10 organic results | ~38% (Ahrefs) / ~17% (BrightEdge) | Ahrefs and BrightEdge, 2025 |
The overlap number in the last row is the strategic one: most pages cited in AI Overviews are not the pages ranking in the top ten, which means extraction is winnable without first winning the ranking war. Our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews turns that gap into a step-by-step plan.
What Content Formats Win Links and Citations
The formats AI cites and the formats that earn backlinks point the same direction: structured lists for citations, original data and long-form depth for links. Listicles take 21.9% of AI citations (Wix via Contently, 2026) and original research earns about 6.4x the backlinks of opinion content (Ranktracker/ Linkpanda roundups).
| Stat | Figure | Source, year |
|---|---|---|
| Share of all AI citations earned by listicles, the top-performing format | 21.9% | Wix research via Contently, Apr 2026 |
| Google AI Overviews that use list formatting | 40 to 61% | Semrush and Search Engine Land optimization guides, 2025 |
| Backlink multiple earned by original research and data content vs opinion content | ~6.4x | Ranktracker/Linkpanda link-building roundups, 2025 |
| Additional links earned by 3,000+ word content vs shorter content | 77.2% more | Ranktracker/Linkpanda link-building roundups, 2025 |
| Sources cited by short vs very long AI Overview answers (under 600 vs over 6,600 characters) | 5.31 vs 28 on average | SE Ranking, 2025 |
| Marketers who have used AI tools for content research / writing / editing | 72.9% / 43.2% / 36.8% | Digitaloft marketer survey, 2025 |
Read together, the rows argue for a specific content shape: pages built around structured lists and tables for extraction, anchored by original data deep enough to earn links. That combination is exactly what a statistics page like this one is, which is not a coincidence.
Search Behavior and Zero-Click Reality
The zero-click baseline predates AI Overviews: SparkToro's analysis of Datos clickstream data found 58.5% of US Google searches ended without a click in 2024, and by 2026 SparkToro reported fewer than one in three searches still send a click anywhere. Meanwhile the visitors AI assistants do send convert at roughly 4.4x the rate of standard organic (Semrush, 2026).
| Stat | Figure | Source, year |
|---|---|---|
| US Google searches ending without any click | 58.5% | SparkToro/Datos clickstream study, 2024 |
| EU Google searches ending without any click | 59.7% | SparkToro/Datos, 2024 |
| Clicks reaching the open web per 1,000 Google searches, US / EU | 360 / 374 | SparkToro/Datos, 2024 |
| Zero-click searchers who ended the session entirely vs rephrased the query | ~37% vs ~22% | SparkToro/Datos, 2024 |
| Google searches that still send a click anywhere, 2026 follow-up | fewer than 1 in 3 | SparkToro, 2026 |
| ChatGPT weekly active users, Dec 2025 and Jun 2026 | 800M+, then 900M+ | OpenAI figures, as reported by Reuters, 2025 to 2026 |
| Queries ChatGPT processes per day | 1B+ | OpenAI, 2025, as compiled by Backlinko |
| Share of global query volume still handled by traditional search engines | ~90% | Market-share roundups (Digital Applied), 2026 |
| Conversion rate of AI-referred visitors vs standard organic visitors | ~4.4x higher | Semrush, 2026 |
| ChatGPT referral conversion vs non-branded organic, 94 ecommerce brands | 1.81% vs 1.39% (31% higher) | Visibility Labs, 2025 |
| Growth in ChatGPT referral sessions across the same 94 brands, 2025 | +1,079% | Visibility Labs, 2025 |
| Revenue share attributed to ChatGPT referrals across those brands, H2 2025 | 1.48% to 2.2% | Visibility Labs, 2025 |
The pattern is fewer clicks, better clicks. Traffic volume from assistants is still small next to Google, but its intent quality is measurably higher, which changes what a page is for: less a traffic magnet, more the source an assistant quotes and the place a pre-convinced buyer lands. Deciding which pages deserve that investment is exactly what the Growth Map is built to answer from your own Search Console data.
How to Cite These Statistics
Everything on this page is free to cite in your own articles, decks, and reports. We ask for two things: name the original source given in the table row (not just us), and link back to this page so your readers can check the data and find the current numbers. This is the July 2026 edition; the page is updated monthly.
A note on how to quote responsibly: several of these figures come from vendors measuring their own market, so treat any single number as directional rather than gospel, and prefer the framing "per [original source], as compiled by SearchHandled" when you cite a row. If you spot a stat here that its original source has since revised or retracted, tell us and we will fix it in the next monthly pass. That standard is the whole reason this page exists.
Questions People Ask About This Data
- What percentage of AI citations come from third-party websites?
About 83%, per Profound's analysis of 680 million AI citations collected between August 2024 and June 2025. Only around 17% of citations point to brand-owned sites. The practical implication: most of your AI visibility is earned on pages you do not control, which is why third-party mentions, reviews, and community presence matter so much.
- Do backlinks or brand mentions matter more for AI search visibility?
Brand mentions, by roughly three to one. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in 2025 and found web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI Overview visibility versus 0.218 for backlinks, with YouTube mentions the single strongest signal at 0.737. Backlinks still matter for classic rankings and for getting crawled, but they are no longer the strongest predictor of whether an AI assistant names you.
- What content format gets cited most by AI assistants?
Listicles. Wix research reported via Contently in April 2026 found list-format articles receive 21.9% of all AI citations, the highest of any format. That squares with SERP-side data: optimization guides from Semrush and Search Engine Land put list formatting in 40 to 61% of Google AI Overviews. Structured, scannable formats are the extraction-friendly shape.
- How often are these statistics updated?
Monthly. This is the July 2026 edition. Each update re-verifies existing figures against their original sources, retires numbers that have gone stale, and adds new studies as they publish. Every statistic on the page carries a named source and a year, and anything we cannot attribute gets cut rather than kept.
