Google News Is a Publishing System, Not a Submission Hack

You do not submit a site for ordinary Google News eligibility. Google automatically discovers and considers policy-compliant news content. The practical job is to make every article trustworthy, technically accessible, and unmistakably connected to a real publication.

In March 2025, Google completed the transition to automatically generated publication pages. RSS feeds and web locations previously configured in Publisher Center no longer control those pages. A Publisher Center profile, AdSense account, or customized logo does not improve organic ranking.

This makes the website itself the source of truth. Google describes automatic ranking factors that include relevance, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, usability, location, and language. No single field guarantees placement, and eligibility does not guarantee impressions.

Start With a Story That Deserves News Distribution

News intent has a clear “why now.” An original investigation, local event, product change, data release, public decision, or reported development has a time-bound reason to exist. A lightly rewritten evergreen explainer with a new date is not transformed into news.

Editorial signalStrong implementationWeak implementation
Original valueReporting, documents, interviews, data, or direct observationRephrasing another outlet without adding evidence
TimelinessA real event or substantive new developmentChanging a timestamp to simulate freshness
HeadlineSpecific, accurate, and aligned with the visible titleWithholding context or exaggerating what happened
AccountabilityNamed author, publication, company, and contact pathAnonymous copy with no ownership information

Separate news, opinion, analysis, sponsored material, and evergreen resources visually and editorially. Sponsored content must be disclosed, and ads should not overwhelm the article. Google News also prohibits previews that mislead readers about what the destination contains.

Make Every Article Self-Identifying

A person arriving from a feed should be able to identify who wrote the story, when it was published, whether it changed, and which organization is responsible without opening another tab. Put this information in visible HTML near the headline.

  • A single descriptive headline that matches the article’s subject.
  • A visible publication date and time, with a time zone where useful.
  • A modified time only after a meaningful factual or editorial update.
  • A linked byline and author page that demonstrates relevant experience.
  • A publication page with ownership, standards, correction, and contact details.
  • Clear labels for opinion, sponsored, subscription, or syndicated material.

The same accountability signals strengthen the broader content operations system. Document corrections visibly instead of silently rewriting material facts, and preserve the original URL as a story develops.

Build Permanent, Crawlable News Architecture

Every article needs a unique, permanent URL. Link to it through static HTML from stable section pages such as Local, Business, Science, or Sports. Google recommends anchor text that matches the article title and warns against placing the article body only inside client-side JavaScript.

  1. Publish the canonical article at one durable URL.
  2. Link it from a crawlable section, homepage, or topic page.
  3. Return a healthy 200 response with the article in rendered HTML.
  4. Keep pagination and archive paths accessible as the story ages.
  5. Update or remove links when a URL redirects or is withdrawn.

A news sitemap can provide an additional discovery path, but it does not replace internal links or policy compliance. Keep its publication data accurate and include only the news inventory the sitemap is meant to represent. For the wider sitemap model, see the XML sitemap guide.

Align the Visible Story, Metadata, and NewsArticle Data

Google says Article and NewsArticle structured data are optional, but accurate markup can clarify the headline, images, publication and modification dates, author, and free-access status. Mark up facts already present on the page; do not use schema to invent missing transparency.

Page elementConsistency check
HeadlineTitle tag, H1, social title, and headline data describe the same story
DatesVisible times and datePublished or dateModified tell the same history
AuthorVisible byline and author data resolve to a real profile
ImageRepresentative, crawlable, high-quality, and not a logo or text card
AccessFree, metered, or paywalled status is represented honestly

Use the image SEO guide to make lead media stable and discoverable. For headlines, avoid treating the title tag and the editorial display headline as unrelated assets; the title and description field note explains how to keep both useful.

Protect the Reading Experience

The story should begin promptly, remain legible on a phone, and not be buried by ads, subscription prompts, or a wall of related links. Mandatory consent and subscription experiences should preserve enough page context to help a reader understand where they arrived.

Keep main text, media captions, and material updates equivalent on mobile and desktop. Ensure that robots rules do not block article assets and that lazy loading does not require a swipe, tap, or scroll before the primary content exists. These checks overlap with the mobile SEO field note.

Install a News Prepublication Gate

Run the same short release check for breaking updates and planned reporting. It should be fast enough for an editor to use under deadline and strict enough to catch trust or discovery failures before a story enters the archive.

  1. Confirm the “why now,” original evidence, and responsible editor.
  2. Verify names, claims, links, captions, and disclosure language.
  3. Match the visible headline, title metadata, dates, author, and article data.
  4. Open the canonical URL logged out on desktop and a narrow phone.
  5. Confirm a 200 response, crawlable section link, representative image, and sitemap entry.
  6. Record corrections or material updates without erasing the publication history.

For a live story, make meaningful updates at the existing permanent URL and state what changed. Create a separate article only when a new development has its own reader job and reporting, not merely to obtain another fresh timestamp.

Measure News Surfaces Without Combining Unlike Traffic

Search Console’s Google News report covers performance from news.google.com and the Google News apps. The News tab inside Google Search belongs to the Search results report and can be isolated with the News search-type filter. Keep these views separate before comparing articles, countries, and dates.

Track more than total clicks: publication-to-discovery lag, headline and topic patterns, returning readers, newsletter conversions, corrections, and the proportion of reporting that keeps earning citations after the news cycle. Feed exposure can be volatile, so use cohorts rather than promising a fixed traffic baseline.

The Search Console operator guide provides a repeatable reporting rhythm. If a story also appears in personalized feeds, analyze that separately with the Google Discover field note.

Questions About Google News SEO

Do publishers need to apply for Google News?

No. Google says eligible news content is automatically considered for Google News and news surfaces. Inclusion is not guaranteed, and Publisher Center is no longer a submission path for publication pages.

Is NewsArticle structured data required?

No. Google says Article or NewsArticle markup is not required for eligibility, but accurate properties can help it understand the headline, images, dates, and authors. The visible article and structured data must agree.

Should an old article get a new publication date after a small edit?

No. Keep the original publication date and add a modified date only for a meaningful update. Google News policies warn against artificially freshening stories without substantial new information.

Where should Google News traffic be measured?

Use the dedicated Google News performance report for news.google.com and the Android and iOS apps. Traffic from the News tab in Google Search appears in the Search results report when filtered to the News search type.
