Decisions first
Build five pages: executive decisions, Search Console demand, landing-page outcomes, content changes, and data quality. Use native Search Console and Google Analytics connectors, normalize canonical landing-page identity in controlled fields, keep query metrics and session metrics in separate charts unless the join grain is truly shared, and show window, source, timezone, filters, and freshness on every page.
- A dashboard is a decision interface, not a warehouse and not a gallery of every metric.
- Search Console clicks and GA4 sessions use different scopes; display rather than hide the difference.
- Seven reliable charts with owners beat forty blended charts without decisions.
Start with five decision pages
Organize the report around the meetings and actions it must support, with a small data-quality page that can invalidate the rest when collection breaks.
The executive page answers what changed, why confidence is limited, what shipped, and which owner acts next. Search demand covers page-query impressions, clicks, CTR, and position. Landing-page outcomes covers organic sessions, engaged sessions, key events, and revenue where governed. Content changes annotates releases. Data quality shows freshness, connection errors, unknown acquisition, and missing page identity.
Google's Search Console connector can extend a Looker Studio report with other sources such as Analytics and Ads. That capability does not make the sources equivalent. Choose one source of truth per metric and label it in the chart title or subtitle.
| Report page | Question | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Decisions | What requires action? | Growth lead |
| Search demand | Where did visibility change? | SEO operator |
| Landing outcomes | What happened after arrival? | Analytics owner |
| Changes | What did we ship? | Editorial/publishing |
| Data quality | Can the report be trusted? | Data owner |
Configure Search Console and GA4 separately
Select the exact property, Search Console table scope, GA4 property, date controls, and credentials, then verify control totals before styling charts.
The Search Console connector requires access to the property and exposes site- or URL-oriented scopes. Record the chosen property and scope in the report. GA4 uses event, session, and user dimensions; choose session-scoped traffic dimensions for landing-session acquisition questions and event-scoped attribution for key-event credit questions.
Use reusable normalized-page fields for host, path, trailing slash, and declared canonical only when the transformation is governed. Do not strip locale, query parameters, or case universally; those may represent distinct pages. Preserve the original source field for debugging.
Build seven charts that create decisions
Use scorecards sparingly and pair every trend with a breakdown or queue that makes the next investigation possible.
A compact monthly set includes Search Console clicks and impressions over time, non-brand query clusters, page CTR opportunities, organic landing sessions, landing-page key-event rate, published changes, and a prioritized action table. Add a crawl or CRM view only when it has a stable owner and decision.
Show current and comparison windows, minimum-volume rules, source, last refresh, and applicable filters. Annotate migrations, outages, consent changes, campaigns, and major releases. An unexplained line is not insight; the report should preserve the events needed to interpret it.
- Visibility trend
- Non-brand demand
- Page CTR queue
- Organic landing sessions
- Key-event outcomes
- Change annotations
- Owned action queue
Avoid the seductive broken blend
Do not join Search Console query rows to GA4 sessions as though a shared page and date reconstruct a user journey. Use adjacent charts or aggregate page-window bridges with explicit many-to-many limits.
A page can receive many queries and many sessions in the same day. Joining both detail tables on page and date multiplies rows and inflates metrics. If you need one page-level table, aggregate each source to one row per normalized page and reporting window before joining, and keep the source metrics in separate columns.
Add data-quality tiles for connector freshness, unmatched page share, unknown GA4 acquisition, and comparison-window completeness. Lock the production report, version major field changes, and assign a credential owner so a departed employee does not silently end monthly reporting.
Continue the workflow
Create the data-quality page and reconcile one 28-day control window before building the executive charts or sharing the report.
- SEO reporting framework: run the decision meeting the dashboard is designed to support
- Search Console vs analytics: understand why the source totals differ
- GA4 organic attribution: choose the correct traffic-source scope for outcomes
Questions teams ask
- Can Looker Studio connect directly to Search Console?
Yes. Google's Search Console connector lets an authorized user select an accessible property and build reports from its performance data.
- Should Search Console clicks equal GA4 organic sessions?
No. They have different definitions, collection paths, attribution, time handling, consent effects, and processing. Use the difference as a data-quality clue, not a forced reconciliation target.
- How should Search Console and GA4 be blended?
Prefer adjacent source-specific charts. If a page-level bridge is required, aggregate each source independently to one canonical-page and date-window row before joining, and disclose unmatched pages and scope limits.
