Decisions first
Use Search Console for query, page, country, device, impression, click, CTR, and position data. Use Matomo for sessions, actions, goals, and revenue. Compare the two at a landing-page and date-window level while keeping each metric in its original system and timezone.
- Do not equate a Search Console click with a Matomo visit.
- Join on normalized canonical landing page plus a declared time window.
- Prioritize decisions with both visibility evidence and business consequence.
Give each system one job
Search Console is the record of Google Search exposure; Matomo is the record of behavior on properties you measure. Neither replaces the other.
A Search Console row can tell you that a query produced impressions and clicks for a page. It cannot tell you whether that visitor completed a goal inside your site. Matomo can record the landing page, behavior, and goal, but it usually does not receive the exact Google query because search referrers protect it.
The useful model is therefore a bridge, not a merge. Keep source-labelled columns and let a decision reference both: a page has growing impressions, a falling CTR, meaningful assisted conversions, and therefore deserves a snippet test before a rewrite.
| Question | System | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Was the result shown? | Search Console | Impressions |
| Was it selected? | Search Console | Clicks and CTR |
| Which page received the visit? | Both | Search page / landing page |
| What happened next? | Matomo | Actions and goals |
| Did it create value? | Matomo | Goal value or revenue |
Choose import or analysis-layer join
Matomo's Search Engine Keywords Performance feature can import Search Console data. A separate analysis-layer join is better when you need custom canonical rules, longer history, or multi-site governance.
The Matomo import reduces tool switching and is useful for routine reporting. Follow Matomo's own setup documentation and check the selected Search Console property, permissions, timezone, and historical coverage. The imported dataset remains governed by Search Console's dimensions and limitations.
A warehouse or controlled export is preferable when aliases, migrations, and canonical consolidations require a page identity table. Store the original URL, normalized URL, canonical target, and effective dates. That makes an apparent traffic loss explainable when several old URLs become one new page.
- Record the source property and site ID.
- Align date boundaries before comparison.
- Normalize host, protocol, trailing slash, and declared canonical.
- Keep raw exports so transformation rules can be audited.
Build a decision queue, not a blended score
Rank page jobs with transparent components. A single proprietary score hides why a page moved and encourages false precision.
Useful candidates include high-impression pages with deteriorating CTR, pages whose non-brand query coverage shrank, pages with stable organic entry volume but lost goals, and pages receiving conversions from queries they barely address. For each candidate, display the Search Console evidence beside the Matomo outcome.
Require a minimum evidence window and show uncertainty. A page with ten impressions and one click does not have a 10% CTR insight; it has a tiny sample. Seasonal businesses need a comparable prior period, while recently migrated sites need a post-migration baseline.
| Signal | Likely diagnosis | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions up, CTR down | Snippet or intent mismatch | Inspect queries and result presentation |
| Clicks down, position stable | Demand or result-layout change | Compare query demand and SERP |
| Organic visits stable, goals down | On-page conversion issue | Inspect journey and goal health |
| Many URLs share one query | Possible cannibalization | Review page jobs and canonicals |
Name the measurement limits
The tools will not reconcile perfectly, and forcing them to do so destroys useful information about collection differences.
Clicks and visits have different definitions. Consent, blockers, redirects, multiple clicks, timezone boundaries, canonical attribution, and processing delays can all create differences. Document those causes in the dashboard instead of adding a hidden correction factor.
This workflow is available today as a method using Matomo's own Search Console import. It should not be described as a native SearchHandled Matomo connector until such a connector is operational. The distinction keeps editorial guidance from becoming a product promise.

Questions teams ask
- Can Matomo show Google Search Console keywords?
Matomo documents a Search Engine Keywords Performance feature that imports Search Console data after the required connection and permissions are configured.
- Why do Search Console clicks and Matomo visits differ?
They use different collection and attribution rules. Consent, blockers, redirects, timezones, repeat clicks, canonical attribution, and processing can all create legitimate differences.
- Does SearchHandled have a native Matomo connector?
Not currently. This guide describes an operating method using Matomo's documented Search Console import and controlled exports; it is not a claim that Matomo connects directly to SearchHandled.
