Decisions first

Use Shopify's current GraphQL Admin API with the narrow content scopes, map each job to an Article or Page deliberately, create it unpublished unless policy authorizes otherwise, inspect user errors and the returned ID, then verify the storefront URL, metadata, canonical, theme output, and conversion path.

  • Choose Article versus Page from the reader job, not convenience.
  • Treat theme and app metadata as part of the destination contract.
  • Separate content publication from product and collection merchandising changes.

Choose the right Shopify resource

Articles serve a dated blog or editorial stream; Pages serve durable standalone content. Product and collection changes belong to separate merchandising workflows with different risk.

Record whether the opportunity is a guide, campaign page, evergreen reference, collection aid, or product decision page. An Article needs a blog association, author, title, body, handle, and optional summary, tags, image, template, and publication state. A Page has its own handle, body, template, and visibility fields.

Do not force every search opportunity into the blog because the API is convenient. URL location, theme template, navigation, internal links, and buyer journey determine whether the page can perform its intended job.

Build the Admin API contract

Use the versioned GraphQL Admin API and request only the scopes required for content. Validate the store, blog, templates, authorship policy, metafields, and URL handles before the first write.

Shopify documents write_content and write_online_store_pages as relevant scopes for the current mutations. Keep the access token server-side, record the shop and API version, and capture userErrors as structured failures rather than treating a partial response as success.

Metadata may be controlled by resource fields, metafields, theme logic, or an installed SEO app. Inspect the actual store implementation and fail visibly when the approved field has no tested destination.

  • Stable source job and destination ID
  • Explicit API version and minimum scopes
  • Known blog or page destination
  • Handle-conflict policy
  • Theme and metafield mapping
  • Rate-limit and retry behavior

Create unpublished, read back, and preview

For review-gated work, set visibility so the new content is not public, store the returned Shopify GID, query it back, and inspect the rendered preview through the store's supported workflow.

Compare title, handle, body, author, summary, tags, image, template, metafields, and intended state. Make retries idempotent by retaining the destination ID and content checksum. If a timeout occurs, query before creating another resource.

Theme filters and apps can change rendered headings, metadata, schema, images, and related-content modules. API fidelity and storefront fidelity therefore need separate checks.

Publish and measure the commerce job

Verify the public page and the next commercial action. Organic sessions without product discovery, collection engagement, email capture, or purchase assistance may not justify the page.

After publication, verify status, handle, canonical, robots, title, description, H1, image, structured data, internal links, and mobile rendering. Confirm that the content links to relevant collections or products without manufacturing irrelevant anchors.

Measure its target query cluster and qualified behavior. Keep Shopify order and customer data outside the content connector unless a separate, reviewed use case explicitly requires it.

Continue the workflow

Test one unpublished Article and one Page in a development store, including handle conflicts, theme rendering, timeouts, and public verification.

Questions teams ask

Should Shopify SEO content be an Article or a Page?

Use an Article for dated editorial content within a blog and a Page for durable standalone content. The reader job, URL architecture, template, and internal path should decide.

Can Shopify articles be created unpublished?

The current GraphQL articleCreate input includes publication controls. A draft-first or unpublished workflow is the safer default when human review is required.

Does Shopify API success prove the SEO page is correct?

No. Themes, apps, metafields, and storefront rendering can change the public result. Query the object back and verify the actual storefront page.
