Google Ads Keyword Planner integration

Google Ads Keyword Planner is on the map, not in the product yet.

Real search volume, competition, and CPC from Keyword Planner decide what gets written next.

Not connectable yet

We read from this source rather than publish to it, which means our webhook is no substitute: it delivers outward. This needs an inbound OAuth connection we have not built yet, so there is nothing here to connect today.

How it works

The Google Ads connection uses Google OAuth against your Google Ads account together with our developer token, which holds Basic Access approval from Google. Through KeywordPlanIdeaService we generate keyword historical metrics, real search volumes, competition levels, and CPC ranges, and feed them into the opportunity engine so topics are prioritized on demand that Google itself reports rather than third-party estimates.

In the loop, this sharpens the opportunity step. Search Console shows where you already appear; Keyword Planner shows how much demand exists for topics you have not written yet, and what advertisers pay for those clicks, which is a blunt but honest proxy for commercial value. Google's rules apply: accounts without active spend receive bucketed volume ranges, while accounts with active spend get full numbers, and we work with whichever your account provides.

Best forTeams who want topic prioritization grounded in Google's own volume and value data rather than estimates.

Setup, step by step

  1. Have a Google Ads account, since the API reads Keyword Planner data through your account.
  2. Click Connect on the Google Ads card and sign in with a Google account that can access it.
  3. Approve the OAuth consent screen.
  4. Select the Google Ads account to read through, if you have several.
  5. Review the first keyword metrics pull, which joins volume, competition, and CPC to your opportunity list.

Best practices

Know what your account tier returns

Accounts with active spend get precise volumes; accounts without get bucketed ranges. Both are usable for prioritization, and we label which kind your data is instead of presenting ranges as exact numbers.

Let CPC inform priority, not dictate it

High CPC signals commercial value but also competition. We weigh it alongside volume and your existing rankings, and the strongest opportunities are often mid-CPC topics adjacent to pages you already rank.

Batch keyword research through the pipeline

Quotas on keyword requests are real, so metrics are pulled in scheduled batches for the topic sets under consideration rather than ad hoc for every idea. The opportunity list is where the results land.

Keep the Ads account open

The connection reads through your Google Ads account, so the account has to stay active. It does not need to run campaigns for the connection to work, though spend improves the data quality per Google's rules.

Known issues

What practitioners actually report, from official docs, issue trackers, and community forums.

Developer token access is a real gate

Google Ads API access requires a developer token with an approved access level, and Basic Access is an application Google reviews rather than a checkbox.

How we handle itThe developer token is ours and already holds Basic Access approval, so you never touch that process. Your side of setup is only the OAuth sign-in against your own Ads account.

Full volumes effectively require active spend

Accounts without sufficient active spend receive bucketed volume ranges from Keyword Planner instead of precise monthly figures, per Google's long-standing policy.

How we handle itWe use whichever granularity your account returns and label it honestly. Bucketed ranges still rank topics against each other usefully, and precise figures appear if your account runs spend.

Quotas bite on large keyword sets

Generating historical metrics for very large keyword lists runs into API quotas, and naive bulk research gets throttled.

How we handle itKeyword sets are batched and scheduled inside quota, prioritizing the topics the opportunity engine is actively weighing, so research completes reliably rather than in a rush that trips limits.

Questions teams ask

Do we need to run ads for this to work?

No. You need a Google Ads account, but it does not have to run campaigns. Without active spend Google returns bucketed volume ranges rather than exact figures, which we label clearly and still use for prioritization.

Can SearchHandled spend money or change our campaigns?

No. The connection reads Keyword Planner data through KeywordPlanIdeaService. We do not create, edit, or manage campaigns, budgets, or any other part of your Ads account.

How is this different from third-party keyword tools?

The volume, competition, and CPC figures come from Google's own Keyword Planner rather than a third party's clickstream model. It is the same data an advertiser planning spend would see.
